ST. ROSE FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING
Wednesday, August 26, 1:05 p.m.
In attendance: Father Leo, Nancy Miller, Joe Surges, Donna Hoffmann, Pat Botta, Joly
Agdinaoay, Jesse Peralta, Barbara Denton, Sylvia Smith, Christina Jensen (in office)
Chair Nancy Miller welcomed and thanked all for coming asking Father Leo to lead us in
an opening prayer.
Nancy read from the Guidelines for Finance Councils put out by the Diocese of
Oakland, June 2003. She referenced portions: the Finance Council to assist the pastor
in the temporal goods of the parish; to keep finances in harmony; to give pastor
resources to make decisions knowing that ultimately his is the final decision; a three to
five-year plan which starts with the Finance Council.
*MOTION: Joe Surges made a motion to accept the July minutes. Donna Hoffmann
seconded the motion. Approved.
Father received an email from Bishop Barber which Barbara Denton read to the group.
It basically stated Father was to cease the Save St. Rose Church material being viewed
and considered by the public. The Bishop suggested that Father Larry Young from St.
Patrick Church in Rodeo come to speak to the congregation announcing St. Rose’s
congregation would be attending his church. The Bishop also requested that Father
Leo consider saying Mass at St. Patrick in Rodeo. Joe Surges stated that the
St. Rose’s website has deleted the petition and certain language. Father has continued
to work with the committee to save St. Rose.
Barbara Denton discussed various aspects of that committee and what preparation is
being made.
Donna Hoffmann reported that ICF on September 22 will be celebrating its 99th year.
The polenta dinner will be on Saturday, October 24. She, along with Nancy Carlos, will
be attending the annual ICF Convention, this year in Reno, Nevada.
Nancy reported the Fresno Diocese is losing $9.5 million because the building funds
were placed in their general fund. With that she reminded that our funds with the
Oakland Diocese could be frozen.
Going to finances: in July St. Rose’s net income was -$9079 while in June it was -$6694. Discussion ensued why are we over budget. Looking at Buildings and
Grounds on the Profit & Loss statement could be one reason. Nancy suggested the
committee, at home, take a look at the present statement and compare it to the 2025
statement. See what we can come up with.
Nancy ran figures: Living Memorial $25,662.08. $741 Men’s Club meant to go towards
Lady of Guadalupe celebration, $442.28 Women’s Club meant to go towards faith
formation. Christina will follow through on requesting invoices to go ahead and close
those categories.
Dedicated Account $74,975.24. Reconciled General Account at the end of July
$18,147.37. Comment: takes approximately $14,000 to run Parish monthly. It was
noted that Father Leo signs the bank statements to verify reconciliation.
St. Patrick Mission checking account $36,762.51.
St. Rose Parish does not pay the Diocesan assessment and will not do so in the future.
Repair and Maintenance: there is a water leak in Father Leo’s bathroom. One estimate
is $10,000 - $12,000 to repair. It was suggested seeking other bids.
Jesse Peralta reported on some upcoming fundraisers: November 7, Masquerade
party, tickets $50 adults, $25 ages below 16 years. There will be a program booklet:
cost to ad $50 full page, $25 half page; tickets are now available. November 22
Christmas Market with pancake breakfast and lunch.
Father mentioned All Saints Day donation: $10 per deceased person not a group.
$1600 was earned from the St. Rose Novena.
Discussion was held re Narcotics Anonymous: now paying $40 a month to rent CCD
building. Contract was up the end of July. Suggested rent $100 monthly. The group is
asking $70 monthly. Joe will discuss with them the cost of keeping the building with
ongoing utilities; happens to be $70 a month. Needs to be $100.
Checks returned: $800 check from security company; $60 check from individual for
Fish Fry. No action has been taken.
Barbara Denton spoke of the ongoing work of the Steering Committee: meeting with an
attorney for $100 an hour, 15% off at $85 an hour. The attorney read the Committee’s
Position Paper with suggestions to make the paper stronger. There will be a ‘mandate’
to sign and notarize asking him to represent the parishioners.
